Easy
Steps for a
Perfect Summer Vacation
There's so much anticipation
built into a vacation, that it's easy for the
trip to fall short of the expections you've
placed on it. A little planning and an attitude
shift can make all the difference. This year,
use our checklist and see if your vacation isn't
the best one yet.
The
Rules
- Research
your destination. This
used to be an arduous task. With the internet
at your fingertips, you can learn more about
the real experience of climbing the terraces
to Machu Picchu in an evening than you could
years ago in a month of reading. You can also
book your travel online, often receiving internet-only
discounts. Try
these sites: Travelocity,
Orbitz,
TravelSense
(American Society of Travel Agents), TripAdvisor,
airline websites, Gorp
(includes 200+ family-inspired adventures.)
- Tap
into those who've been there.
Put in the key words of where you want to
go and the word "travel" into your favorite
search engine. You'll
quickly have lots of sites to browse,
including personal sites with travel journals
and blogs, as well as tips and warnings from
those who've "been there, done that, got the
T-shirt."

- Everybody
gets a say. You may remember
vacations from your childhood when the grown-ups
dictated where you went, what you ate, what
you did. (You probably pitched a fit or two
in the back seat of the car, as well.) Eliminate
this problem by letting each person on the
trip select one special thing they want to
do at your destination (or
along the way). Everyone participates in everyone
else's choice, and the grumbling goes down
because the anticipation is equally distributed.
- Take
the scenic route! We're
so goal-oriented these days. That's fine when
you're working, but really misses the point
of a vacation. Getting there (and back) really
IS half the fun, so make the most of it. If
you're driving, join the AAA before you go
-- not only will this give you peace of mind
for road assistance, but the
AAA can provide you with detailed trip routing
so you'll get just the kind of journey you
prefer. (The AAA has branches
all over the US. Put "AAA" into your search
engine, and then look for your regional club.)
- Travel
light. You don't want
to spend your vacation nursing a sore back
from lugging half of your wardrobe and household
goods across the landscape. If you're going
someplace casual, thrown in perhaps one nice
outfit for dinners out, but stick to the comfortable
basics. You can
always stop at a laundromat to refresh your
wardrobe, or have your hotel handle some drycleaning
if its necessary.
- Stick
to the Budget. When
planning your vacation, establish a budget
with a small amount of wiggle room -- and
stick to it, even
when tempted by something on the road.
This will keep arguments to a minimum, and
you'll be able to go on vacation next year
too, instead of sitting home making credit
card payments.
- Buy
Postcards. You're walking
on a pristine beach in paradise... and trapped
behind the viewfinder of your camera or video-cam
the whole time? Remember that the most enduring
images from your vacation will be the ones
in your mind. Buy
more postcards, and take fewer miles of video.
You'll enjoy the whole vacation more (and
those professional photographers really can
take better photos than you can, most of the
time.)
- Keep
your eye on the target -- FUN!
Somehow, vacations can become a chore if you
lose sight of the fact that just getting away
and being together are a treat. You're
on vacation to relax, enjoy yourself and unwind.
One wise father, traveling internationally
with his two small children, set the rules
before they left home: No more than half an
hour in any museum, and ice cream every afternoon.
They had a great time!
No matter where your
travels take you this summer, we'll be here
when you get back to handle the aftermath. Drop
us a postcard -- we'd love to share your adventures! |
